The world of NIGHT RIVER is one in which the moon shines on a big blue-collar river while men blow things up for money, good cops toil alongside the corrupt, newspapers refuse to retract lies, human resource departments rule firms with arcane bureaucracy, and twin sisters just might be true opposites. Behold Ryan O’Brian naively anticipating a rewarding post-Marine Corps career when civilian life pokes him in the eye and transforms him into a person of unpremeditated action.

This novel, by the talented Hugh MacMullan, is suspenseful, thoughtful, dark, and funny. I got sucked into the story immediately with the action packed first couple chapters. Then MacMullan slows the pace to give us some more insight into the complex protagonist Ryan O’Brien. The suspense ebbs and flows which kept me engaged without the book seeming too superficially plot-driven. The supporting characters in the novel are also brilliantly conceived - MacMullan could certainly write his next novel about any one of them! While this book would absolutely appeal to Marines, dog-lovers, and sailors, it also makes a great read for anyone who likes thoughtful suspense novels. I highly recommend it!Product details

NIGHT RIVER edition by Hugh MacMullan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I had a difficult time getting into this story at the beginning, but once I continued, I found it enjoyable. There were a lot of good descriptions, but at times, there was also too much detail that slowed the story down. Good plot and good characterizations.
Maybe it was the likeable Ryan, maybe a vague familiarity with the locale, or maybe the chemistry between Clemmie and Ryan, but this work is a truly enjoyable read. Recommend to anyone seeking a diversion in Philly that doesnt involve sports or Independence Mall. Well done and reserving of accolades. Reminds me oh Bellows Humboldt in throwing out trivia that ne needs to research.
A great summer page-turner. It took a little while for the story to warm up but once it took off I found myself doing everything I could to carve out time to get to the end and find out how it all turned out for our hero Ryan O'Brien. That's exactly what I want out of an action/thriller and that is what Night River delivered. The bonus was the obvious knowledge of and passion for sailing and the settings in and around the Delaware River and Philadelphia came through as well and provided a great backdrop to a fun story. I always enjoy books where the love someone has for something comes through to the point that it makes you wish that you were more interested and involved in that "something" and there are a few examples of that throughout Night River. I highly recommend giving it a read.
Enjoyed the personal style and 'realness' of the main character. Author kept me interested from start to finish. If you like characters that believable even when they do things you certainly wouldn't, you'll like this book.
It started out strong with lots of action. It had some humor as well. But for a guy who just got out of the marines, Ryan O'Brian seemed kind of stupid. He is distracted and lets people sneak up on him. Also, when he jumps down into the hull of a barge, he doesn't plan on a way to get out. Just relies on luck. We spend a lot of time in his thoughts about stuff that seems really abstract and I felt like skipping pages. I'm surprised that this character wasn't killed in Afghanistan because he was so distracted most of the time, and when he was on a "night mission" he didn't pay attention to what was going on around him. I thought the author could make the character a little more smart, especially for an experienced combat marine. But the story was okay.
I found this book to be a good read in a genre that isn’t generally at the top of my reading list. I had to laugh early on when the protagonist, Ryan O’Brien, stepped into shin-deep muck in the Delaware River, having done the same thing myself off Tinicum Island many years ago.
Ryan, a recently discharge Marine Captain, is making the transition from military life in hostile war zones to what he hopes to be a peaceful, workaday future climbing the corporate ladder. Fate intervenes to throw him into danger and intrigue he never expected.
The pacing is good and keeps one reading. There are a few incongruities, extreme coincidences and loose ends that never got tied up, though I have found these in most works of this genre and think they are essential to get from here to there without rewriting a tome the size of ‘War and Peace’. Written in the first person, I enjoyed much of Ryan’s internal monologue and his interaction with a diverse cast of characters.
I use the answers to the following questions to rate a novel
Do I care what/where/why things happen in the plot?
Do I care about any of the characters?
Are the plot and characters believable?
And finally, is it worth reading the next page before turning out the light on my night stand?
MacMullan's Night River got the superfecta.
The descriptions of Philadelphia below Market Street, Penn, the Delaware River and its people and environs, and Chester, Pa were spot on. I cared about Ryan (the protagonist) and the people he met. I liked how MacMullan wove in institutions and people that are real or like folks I have seen and met. They passed the believability test with flying colors.
All in all, a fun read.
